Synopsis
In a Salem where dream wielders are feared and persecuted, Azalee Saunders uses her magic to soothe and heal people through dreams. Gabriel Ford, grandson of Salem’s High Witch, has spent his entire life being taught to distrust people like her.
But after Azalee saves Gabriel’s life and accidentally binds him to her, Gabriel becomes the very thing he was raised to hate.
As mysterious murders begin terrorizing Salem and suspicion immediately falls on dream wielders, Azalee and Gabriel are forced into an uneasy alliance to uncover the truth before fear and prejudice destroy everything.
My Thoughts
There’s something about Salem settings, forbidden magic, and enemies forced to work together that immediately grabs my attention, so The Nightmare Keeper already had me interested from the blurb alone.
And honestly, the premise itself ended up being one of the strongest parts of the book for me.
The story follows Azalee, a dream wielder whose magic helps calm and heal people through dreams. In this version of Salem, however, dream wielders are feared, misunderstood and heavily persecuted. Gabriel Ford, grandson of Salem’s High Witch, was raised his entire life to distrust and hate people like Azalee.
Naturally, things become very complicated after Azalee saves Gabriel’s life one night and accidentally turns him into a dream wielder too.
Awkward 3.0😅
Now Gabriel is stuck trying to hide what he has become while questioning everything he was taught growing up, especially because his grandfather would absolutely disown him, or worse, if the truth ever came out.
At the same time, murders begin happening around Salem, and of course everyone immediately blames dream wielders. Very suspicious timing indeed ...
The investigation slowly forces Azalee and Gabriel to work together more and more, and eventually the enemies-to-allies tension turns into attraction.
For me, the biggest highlight of the book was definitely the magic system. The whole concept of dream wielders and Nightmares felt fresh, atmospheric, and genuinely different from many fantasy romances I’ve read lately. I also really enjoyed the darker Salem atmosphere and the themes surrounding fear, prejudice and public hysteria.
The romance itself was enjoyable, though I’ll admit I never became deeply emotionally invested in the couple. I liked them together, but I didn’t fully love them the way I hoped I would.
Still, the story kept me engaged throughout, and the world itself had a lot of really cool ideas that made the book stand out.
Final Thoughts
Overall, while this wasn’t a new favorite for me personally, it was still a very enjoyable fantasy read with a unique magic system, dark atmosphere, and an interesting Salem setting.
If you enjoy magical mysteries, enemies-to-allies dynamics, and darker fantasy worlds filled with prejudice and secrets, this one is definitely worth checking out.
