Synopsis

"It takes two slices of bread to make a stubborn sandwich."

Honestly...

That quote alone should tell you exactly what kind of book you're about to read.

Honey Frost is Foxe Holler's resident Farewitch, using recipes, baked goods and a touch of magic to heal the people in her small community. While everyone relies on Honey's talents, she's quietly carrying a burden of her own, desperately searching for a cure for her mother's mysterious illness.

Then the town's infamous Warlock appears with an unusual proposition.

He needs a Farewitch.

In exchange for helping cure a mysterious curse, Honey will gain access to his legendary magical library, filled with ancient grimoires and recipes that might finally hold the answers she's been searching for.

Soon, Honey finds herself living in Knight Manor, surrounded by magical kitchens, a grumpy warlock, a delightfully intimidating housekeeper, an adorable young ward... and a house that seems to have a personality all its own.

My Thoughts

This was such a sweet, cozy read.

While the story occasionally ventures into darker and more emotional territory, it never loses the warmth that makes cozy fantasy so comforting to read.

Honey was an absolute delight.

One thing I particularly appreciated was that she was older than many of the protagonists I've been reading lately. She felt capable, compassionate, wonderfully stubborn, and completely devoted to helping everyone around her, even while quietly struggling with her own heartbreak.

The magical baking was easily one of my favorite aspects of the novel.

Honey's recipes don't simply feed people.

They heal them.

Every cake, loaf of bread, or comforting meal carries its own little bit of magic, making food feel like an act of love as much as an act of healing.

Unfortunately...

I happened to read this while recovering from tooth surgery.

There I was, awake at four o'clock in the morning, desperately craving cakes, pastries and fresh bread while surviving on soup.

Let's just say the timing could have been better.

I also loved the setting.

The story blends modern life with whimsical magic so naturally that it never feels forced. Characters use phones, Wi-Fi, and microwaves alongside magical recipes, enchanted kitchens, and centuries-old curses, and somehow it all fits together perfectly.

Then there's Knight Manor.

Between the grumpy warlock, the wonderfully intimidating housekeeper, the adorable young ward, and a house that occasionally seemed just as stubborn as its owner, I found myself completely charmed by every visit.

The romance is definitely a slow burn, but one that feels earned.

Rather than relying on instant attraction, Honey and the Warlock gradually build trust, friendship, and genuine affection. Their banter was adorable, and I loved watching their relationship slowly develop into something both believable and heartfelt.

Honey also experiences some lovely character growth throughout the novel.

At the beginning, she's fiercely independent and reluctant to lean on anyone else, convinced she has to carry every burden herself. Watching her slowly learn that accepting help doesn't make her any less strong added another emotional layer to the story.

My only real criticism comes down to the pacing.

At nearly five hundred pages, I did feel the novel could have been a little shorter. As more storylines were introduced during the middle and final sections, things occasionally felt a bit overcrowded, and the pacing slowed enough that I noticed it.

Thankfully, the warmth, charm and lovable characters more than made up for those slower moments.

Final Thoughts

The Farewitch of Foxe Holler is a wonderfully comforting debut filled with magical baking, cozy fantasy, lovable characters, and a romance that unfolds with patience and heart.

If you enjoy stories where magic is found in everyday acts of kindness, food becomes a form of healing, and grumpy warlocks slowly reveal their softer side, this is absolutely worth picking up.

Just...

Maybe don't read it while you're recovering from dental surgery.

Trust me.
